How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take in Seattle? A Realistic 2026 Timeline
Short answer: for a full kitchen remodel in the Seattle area, plan on 6–10 weeks of construction — and 3–6 months door to door once design, ordering, and permits are counted. The construction is rarely what makes kitchens late; it is everything that has to happen before demo day. Here is the realistic 2026 timeline, phase by phase.
Phase 1: Design and selections (3–8 weeks)
Layout, cabinets, counters, appliances, tile, lighting, hardware — every unmade decision here becomes a delay later. The homeowners who finish fastest make all selections before construction starts, because a mid-project tile change can idle the whole crew. Our kitchen remodeling page shows the finish levels most clients choose from.
Phase 2: Ordering and lead times (4–12 weeks, overlaps everything)
Cabinets set the schedule. Stock and RTA lines arrive in 2–4 weeks, semi-custom typically 6–10, true custom 10–16+. Counters can't be templated until cabinets are installed, then fabrication takes 1–2 weeks more. Appliances with long lead times should be ordered the week the design is final. A good contractor won't start demolition until the cabinets have a confirmed delivery date — living without a kitchen while boxes sit on backorder is the worst version of a remodel.
Phase 3: Permits (0–8 weeks, depending on scope)
A like-for-like kitchen refresh often needs only trade permits for electrical and plumbing changes, which are fast. Moving walls, relocating gas or plumbing, or structural changes trigger a building permit — and that is where Seattle and Eastside review queues matter. Our city-by-city permit timeline guide breaks down what to expect; we fold permitting into the schedule so it overlaps the cabinet lead time instead of adding to it.
Phase 4: Construction (6–10 weeks typical)
A typical full remodel runs: demo (2–5 days), framing and any layout changes (1–2 weeks), rough plumbing and electrical with inspections (1–2 weeks), drywall and paint (1–2 weeks), cabinet install (2–5 days), counter template and install (1–2 weeks), then tile, appliances, trim and punch list (1–2 weeks). Cosmetic pull-and-replace projects can finish in 3–5 weeks; remodels that open walls or move the kitchen entirely run 10–16.
What actually causes kitchen delays
Three culprits show up again and again: selection changes after ordering, surprises inside the walls of older Seattle homes (knob-and-tube wiring, galvanized plumbing, hidden rot), and counters that can't be templated because a cabinet arrived damaged. Build a 1–2 week buffer into your plans and none of these will derail you.
Plan the budget alongside the schedule
Timeline and cost decisions interact — custom cabinets add weeks and dollars at the same time. See our 2026 kitchen remodel cost guide for real Bellevue–Seattle numbers, then request a free estimate.
